Wanderings by the Seine is the 1834 volume of Turner's Annual Tour, combining the travel writing of Leitch Ritchie with twenty engravings after drawings by the celebrated British landscape artist J.M.W. Turner. Ritchie follows the Seine and describes its landscapes, towns, monuments, history and associations, while Turner's images transform the journey into a major example of nineteenth-century picturesque travel publishing. Among the places and subjects treated are Le Havre, Harfleur, Lillebonne, Quilleboeuf, the Marais Vernier, Rouen and other sites along the Seine. The volume contains twenty steel-engraved plates after Turner's drawings, executed by leading engravers of the period, as well as an additional engraved title page bearing the title Turner's Annual Tour. 1834. The work forms part of the celebrated series of French river views later associated with The Rivers of France and is of particular interest to collectors of J.M.W. Turner, Romantic landscape art, nineteenth-century travel literature, steel engraving and illustrated antiquarian books.
