John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress is one of the most influential works of Christian allegorical literature. Presented as a dream, it follows Christian as he leaves the City of Destruction and undertakes a hazardous spiritual pilgrimage toward the Celestial City. Along the way he encounters characters, places and trials that personify moral and religious ideas, including the Slough of Despond, Vanity Fair and numerous temptations, doubts and dangers. This special 1903 edition was published by Henry Frowde at the Oxford University Press and contains a biographical introduction by Edmund Venables, revised by Mabel Peacock, together with indexes. It is illustrated with 25 drawings on wood by George Cruikshank from the collection of Edwin Truman. The illustrations, which had remained largely unpublished, were issued here as an important visual interpretation of Bunyan's classic. This is the limited edition, restricted to 1000 numbered copies; the present example is copy no. 444.
