The first issue of The International Journal of Nautical Archaeology and Underwater Exploration opens with an editorial by Joan du Plat Taylor and contains major studies by Lucien Basch on ancient wrecks and ship archaeology, Colin J. M. Martin on the Armada wreck El Gran Grifon at Fair Isle, Peter Marsden on the Dutch East Indiaman Amsterdam wrecked near Hastings in 1749, and Philip Mayes and P. A. Mayes on the archaeology of Port Royal, Jamaica. Short communications discuss the discovery of a Punic ship, early hull sheathing, the Graveney boat, Blackfriars wreck III, the Mary Rose, a seventeenth-century merchant vessel near Mullion Cove, the Mewstone Ledge site, a Portuguese wreck off Mombasa, the Restigouche excavation and the Cape Gelidonya wreck. Technical communications cover underwater measuring, controlled airlifting, sub-bottom surveying, transport of the Graveney boat, recording old ships, deep-water archaeology and underwater photomosaic techniques. The issue concludes with news and notes, museum reports, reviews and letters to the editor.
