The Batwa of Uganda. A forgotten people

The history, culture and contemporary situation of the Batwa people of south-western Uganda are explored through photographs, personal testimonies and contextual essays. Particular attention is given to their traditional life as forest-dwelling hunter-gatherers and to the profound changes that followed their displacement from ancestral lands as a result of conservation policies. Social and economic challenges such as poverty, discrimination, loss of land rights and limited access to education and healthcare are examined alongside efforts to preserve cultural identity and traditional knowledge. By documenting both hardship and resilience, the publication offers a portrait of a community striving to maintain its heritage while adapting to the realities of modern Ugandan society.
