Spacious. Willy De Sauter – Alex Hartley is the publication accompanying the 1996 exhibition bringing together Belgian artist Willy De Sauter and British artist Alex Hartley at the Battersea Arts Centre in London. The exhibition created a dialogue between two artistic practices concerned with space, architecture, surface and the relationship between an artwork and its physical surroundings. De Sauter's restrained, geometric and minimalist approach explores the qualities of surfaces, materials and architectural structures, while Hartley's work investigates architecture, constructed environments and the ways in which buildings and spaces are perceived. Together, their works invite reflection on the boundaries between sculpture, installation, abstraction and architecture. The publication documents an early exhibition in Alex Hartley's career as well as Willy De Sauter's work within an international context. Hartley's exhibition history records Spacious in 1996, and his bibliography lists the catalogue in association with Battersea Arts Centre, Victoria Miro Gallery in London and Patrick De Brock Gallery in Knokke. This relatively uncommon publication is of particular interest to collectors and researchers of contemporary Belgian and British art, minimal and conceptual art, installation art, architectural interventions and exhibition catalogues from the 1990s.
