This scholarly work examines the origins of Buddhism by distinguishing the earliest teachings associated with the historical Buddha from later doctrinal and monastic developments preserved in the Pali Canon. Caroline A. F. Rhys Davids analyzes the historical, philosophical, and textual foundations of the Buddhist tradition, reconstructing what she considered the original message of the Sakya teacher before subsequent interpretations and institutional changes shaped the religion. The volume also discusses the evolution of Buddhist doctrine, the formation of the Pali scriptures, and the role of Emperor Ashoka in the spread and preservation of Buddhism. The 1978 Indian edition is a reprint of the original work first published in 1928.
