Plays. Volume Two contains nine tragedies by the ancient Greek dramatist Euripides in English translation: The Bacchanals, Alcestis, Medea, Hippolytus, Ion, The Phoenician Damsels, The Suppliants, Hercules Distracted and The Children of Hercules. Drawing on Greek mythology and legendary history, these dramas explore passion, revenge, sacrifice, family conflict, divine power, war, exile and the often destructive relationship between human beings and the gods. Among the best-known works are Medea, the tragedy of a betrayed woman whose revenge has terrible consequences, Hippolytus, centred on forbidden desire and divine vengeance, and The Bacchanals, in which resistance to the god Dionysus leads to catastrophe. The translations are attributed to Percy Bysshe Shelley, Henry Hart Milman, Robert Potter and Michael Wodhull. This 1947 hardcover is volume two of Euripides' plays in Everyman's Library and carries series number 271; contemporary bookselling records also identify a 1947 edition under this number.
