Siach Sofer, by Yaakov Chaim ben Yosef Yitzchak Sofer, is a comprehensive Hebrew halachic work devoted to the laws and practical requirements of the Jewish scribal profession, particularly the writing of Torah scrolls, Tefillin, Mezuzot, Megillot, and books of the Prophets intended for the reading of the Haftarah. The work is divided into three principal sections. The first presents the practical laws required by a Sofer STaM in the performance of his work. The second section, Binat Sofer, expands upon these laws, explaining their reasoning and tracing them to earlier rabbinic and halachic authorities. The third section, Asifat Yitzchak, contains responsa concerning scribal matters as well as discussions of laws relating to Tefillin, Torah reading, the affixing of Mezuzot, and material derived from Massekhet Soferim. References to the Talmud and major earlier and later authorities, including Maimonides, the Rosh, and Baruch She'amar, are incorporated under the heading Ikvei Chaim. Published in Warsaw in 1863, Siach Sofer provides an important record of nineteenth-century Eastern European Jewish scribal practice and scholarship and is a valuable source for the study of Halacha, Hebrew sacred writing, rabbinic literature, and the history of the Jewish book.
