Kino, a poor pearl diver, lives with his wife Juana and their baby son Coyotito. When Coyotito is stung by a scorpion, Kino desperately needs money for medical treatment. He discovers an exceptionally large and valuable pearl and believes it will transform his family's life. Instead, the promise of wealth awakens greed, violence and exploitation in those around him. Kino's determination to protect the pearl gradually puts everything he values at risk. This Easy Readers edition presents Steinbeck's story in simplified English for language learners.
