A set of 14 photographic colour postcards devoted to Rokuon-ji, better known as Kinkaku-ji or the Golden Pavilion, one of Kyoto's most celebrated Buddhist temples. Photographed by Akisuke Shibata, the cards present views of the famous gold-covered pavilion, its architectural details, surrounding gardens and the temple landscape reflected in the Kyōko-chi pond. Originally associated with the villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the site became a Zen temple after his death and is today one of the best-known monuments of Japanese architecture and garden design. The present postcard set was issued by Rokuon-ji Temple as a souvenir and visual record of the complex. It is of particular interest to collectors of Japanese postcards, architectural photography, Buddhist art, Kyoto memorabilia and Japanese cultural history.
