In 1917, British army psychiatrist Dr William Rivers treats officers suffering from the psychological effects of trench warfare. Among his patients is the celebrated poet Siegfried Sassoon, who has publicly condemned the war and been declared mentally unfit for service. As Rivers struggles to help his patients confront memories of battle, the novel explores the devastating effects of war, the nature of courage and madness, and the difficult relationship between healing and returning soldiers to the front.
