The defeat of Japan and the victory of the Allies did not immediately bring freedom to former European colonies; instead, it sparked wars of independence in various regions. Thousands of young European men were sent to suppress these rebel uprisings, including a young soldier named Gerrit Vermeer. Gerrit's life takes a turn when he is shot and captured during a rebel ambush. During his eighteen months in captivity, he undergoes a transformation of perspective through deep conversations with a doctor and rebel officers, eventually coming to understand and respect their cause. After being released and returned to his home country, Gerrit realizes that he has fallen in love with the land of the equator and the people who fought so hard to defend it.
