lya and Emilia Kabakov: The House of Dreams is the illustrated publication accompanying the exhibition held at the Serpentine Gallery in London from 19 October 2005 to 8 January 2006. For this exhibition Ilya and Emilia Kabakov transformed the gallery into one of their characteristic “total installations”: an immersive environment in which architecture, objects, light and the visitor's own presence became parts of a single work. Responding to the tranquillity of the Serpentine's location in Kensington Gardens, the artists divided the gallery with walls, staircases, freestanding structures and white curtains into a succession of meditative spaces containing beds where visitors were invited to rest, contemplate and dream. The installation explored sleep, dreams, fantasy, memory and the possibility of withdrawing temporarily from everyday reality. The Kabakovs' work combines references to Soviet experience with literature, philosophy, storytelling and utopian ideas, while allowing the spectator to become an active participant in the installation. This scarce Serpentine Gallery publication documents an important installation by two leading figures of Moscow Conceptualism and is of particular interest to collectors of contemporary art, conceptual art, Russian art, installation art and artists' exhibition catalogues.
