J.W. Dunne Brian Inglis (introduction)
An Experiment with Time
Article number 10223250
Starting from his own experiences of dreams that appeared to anticipate later events, J.W. Dunne investigates whether dreams can contain memories not only of the past but also of the future. He develops his theory of “serialism,” according to which ordinary human consciousness perceives only one level of a multidimensional structure of time, while a succession of higher observers could perceive wider stretches of it. Dunne connects this idea with precognition, déjà vu, dreams, consciousness and ultimately immortality. His proposals were influential but remain speculative rather than accepted scientific explanations.
