Of Mice and Men is John Steinbeck's classic novella about George Milton and Lennie Small, two itinerant ranch workers searching for employment in California during the Great Depression. George is intelligent and realistic, while the physically powerful Lennie has an intellectual disability and depends on his friend for guidance and protection. Together they share the dream of earning enough money to buy a small farm of their own, a place where they can live independently and Lennie can tend rabbits. After finding work on a ranch, their dream briefly seems within reach, but Lennie's inability to understand his own strength repeatedly causes difficulties. Through the friendship between George and Lennie and their encounters with other isolated ranch workers, Steinbeck explores loneliness, poverty, friendship, vulnerability, social exclusion and the elusive promise of the American Dream. The story develops towards a tragic conclusion that forces George to make an extraordinarily difficult decision. This 1966 Desclée De Brouwer edition, edited by H. Vandermoere, was intended for Dutch-speaking readers and students of English and combines Steinbeck's original English text with supporting Dutch-language material.
