Entick's New Spelling Dictionary is an eighteenth-century English spelling and pronunciation dictionary intended as a practical guide to writing, speaking and understanding the English language correctly. Originally associated with the lexicographical work of John Entick and here revised, corrected and enlarged by William Crakelt, the dictionary indicates pronunciation through accentuation, identifies parts of speech and presents the different meanings of words in a compact form. It was designed as a practical “pocket companion” for readers of major English authors such as Milton, Pope, Addison, Shakespeare, Tillotson and Locke, while also explicitly addressing young people, artificers, tradesmen and foreigners wishing to improve their command of spoken and written English. The dictionary includes a grammatical introduction to the English language, a list of proper names of men and women and, in this revised edition, a catalogue of words with similar sounds but different spellings and meanings. Published in London by Charles Dilly in 1788, this edition comprises XXXVI + 492 pages. The work is particularly interesting for the history of English lexicography, spelling, pronunciation and language teaching, and illustrates the increasing effort during the eighteenth century to standardise written and spoken English.
