A scholarly study of ancient India during the period of Buddhist ascendancy, examining the country from perspectives that differ from the traditional Brahmanical viewpoint. Drawing on literary, numismatic and inscriptional evidence, the work explores the social, economic, political and religious conditions of the time, including village life, social classes, kings, clans and the development and spread of Buddhism. Particular attention is given to historical figures such as Chandragupta, Ashoka and Kanishka, as well as to the evidence preserved in Pali and Sanskrit literature.
