Ernst Rosenthal comes from a well-known pottery family, his father and uncle being the founders of the Rosenthal china factory at Selb, Bavaria, which, in the course of years, became the largest pottery firm on the Continent. He studied chemistry and physics at the University of Munich, receiving his degree of Doctor of Engineering Science from the University, Berlin-Charlottenburg, in 1914, and thereafter spending many years in the family factory. When he left Germany in 1935 owing to political conditions, Rosenthal Porcelain had become famous both on the Continent and throughout the Americas. Since his student days the author had paid regular visits to the North Staffordshire pottery district, and in 1935 he took up residence in Great Britain. He became, and is still, Consulting Engineer and Technical Adviser to Bullers Ltd., of Tinton, the well-known insulator manufacturers, the Zenith Electric Company Ltd., and to the Dubilier Condenser Company (1925) Ltd. In collaboration with the last two firms, he developed new processes for the manufacture of enamelled and high stability resistors which were used, to a very large extent, during the war by the Navy, Army, and Air Force for electronic equipment. He is also technical adviser to Booths & Colcloughs Ltd., to Ridgway and Adderley Ltd., and to the Lawley Group Ltd. Recently he has renewed his association with the Rosenthal Porcelain Group of factories at Selb, Bavaria, who have appointed him their technical consultant.
