Arthur Boyd: etchings and lithographs Introduction by Imre von Maltzahn Arthur Boyd, born in Melbourne in 1920, has achieved a reputation as an artist far outside his native Australia. In 1959 he came to London, and had his first London exhibition at the Zwemmer Gallery in 1960. In 1962 he embarked seriously on etching and lithography. This book is devoted to the entire graphic work (with the exception of the St Francis lithographs) produced between 1952 and 1969 — etchings, aquatints and drypoints. They can be divided into two groups — 1952–3 and 1968–9; the intervening years were concerned with oils and pastels. In the first group, the artist uses the new medium to restate the work on old themes and images drawn from the richly imaginative painting of the period 1941–5: an obsessive vision concerned with various aspects of sexual desire. In the second group, there is a change both in technical approach and imagery, which is more violent. Five plates are devoted to the Ulysses-like theme of the pioneer aviator Bert Hinkler. Six lithographs in colour are also reproduced. Lund Humphries In association with Maltzahn Gallery. AUTHOR'S NOTE The edition size of all the etchings reproduced in this book is limited to twenty-five with some five Artist's Proofs per image. In the case of the lithographs the edition size is quoted. The collection in this volume is a comprehensive catalogue raisonné of all Boyd's prints up to the end of 1969 with the exception of the series of lithographs illustrating ‘St Francis of Assisi’ by T. S. R. Boase as mentioned in the introduction. However, we have included six lithographs in two colours which were drawn within this period but only recently published by Maltzahn Gallery. Dimensions throughout are given first in inches, then in centimetres. There is a fully comprehensive list of exhibitions in Franz Philipp's book Arthur Boyd. I am indebted to Birgit Skold and Arthur Boyd for their help in producing this book. The printing of this book is limited to 2000 copies.
