The art of India through the ages. Traditions of Indian sculpture, painting and architecture
Artikelnummer 10176310
This book attempts to show that the art of India — including sculpture, painting and architecture — deserves to be regarded on equal terms with the classical art of the West. Through approximately 180 illustrations (in monochrome and colour) it provides a general survey of Hindu and Buddhist art from the Indus valley civilization to the medieval period, including temple-towers, rock-hewn sculptures, bronze figures, frescoes, decorative reliefs, monumental statues and complex architectural compositions. The texts explain how Indian art is deeply rooted in religious, cultural and metaphysical conceptions (such as the aim of mokṣa — spiritual release), and how its forms reflect a continuous tradition rather than a series of regional or chronological anomalies.
