Renaissance Europe 1480-1520

This volume is at once different from and complementary to its companions in the Fontana History of Europe. As Professor Hale writes in his preface: ‘Each chapter is designed to provide information about a specific field of inquiry and at the same time to offer an answer to certain basic questions that must be asked in order to understand men of any period. What were their feelings about the passage of time and about their environment? What sort of polity did they live within and what sense of relationship did they have with it and with other communities ranging in size all the way from Christendom to the family? Within what general economic framework and in what ways did they earn a living? How did they regard themselves and others in terms of status, occupation and living standards? What part did religion play in their lives, and what cultural and intellectual satisfactions were open to them?’ Such an approach enriches the reader’s insight into the past, especially into the texture of everyday life which changed so slowly over the centuries. ‘…a stimulating book, produced with skill and insight.’ — Journal of European Studies / Contents: I Time and Space – Calendar, Clock and Life Span; Diet and Health; Violence and Death; Mobility; Feeling for Nature; Exploration / II Political Europe – The Political Unit; Florence, France, Spain, England and Germany; Internal Development; International Relations and War / III Individual and Community – Christendom; State, Region, Patria; The Foreigner; Local Associations; The Family and Personal Relationships / IV Economic Europe – Continuity and Change; The Tone of Economic Life; Economic Policy and Taxation / V Class – Definitions and Attitudes; Special Cases; The Agricultural Community, Town-dwellers, Aristocracy / VI Religion – Church and State; Clerics; The Appeal of the Church; Dissatisfactions / VII The Arts and their Audience – Music; Drama; Art / VIII Secular Learning – The Appeal of Humanism; Educational Reform; Christian Humanism; Political Thought; Science.
