One thing about Miranda Mancini that has never changed is the name everyone knows her by—Munch. But the child abused by her father and sent into prostitution, the young girl who stole money because she couldn’t do without her drugs, the woman who spent months in prison—that person no longer exists. Instead, Munch Mancini is the surrogate “mother” of a friend’s loving little girl, a woman who can top any male car mechanic’s talents with a tool, and the unbelievably happy fiancée of police detective Enrique “Rico” Chacón. It’s an ordinary life and it’s exactly what she wants. Everything changes when an early morning call from homicide detective Mace St. John brings unbelievable news: Rico is dead, shot during a drug bust—by one of his fellow officers. The police insist Rico was working with drug dealers, but Munch is determined to prove his innocence. She agrees to go undercover, even at risk of her own life. Praise for Barbara Seranella: “Vivid and compelling storytelling coupled with a complex and convincing heroine should expand Seranella’s readership even further.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review). “Seranella’s sixth Mancini novel provides some valuable backstory and promises more misadventure to come for her flawed but appealing heroine.”—Booklist. “An appealing fifth addition to the series featuring a ‘bad girl’ sleuth and down-to-earth characters.”—Library Journal. “Munch’s scenes pulse with startling immediacy.”—Kirkus Reviews. Barbara Seranella was born in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in Pacific Palisades. After a restless childhood that included running away from home at the age of fourteen and riding with outlaw motorcycle clubs, she became an auto mechanic. She retired from wrenching in 1993 and was a member of the Orange County, Los Angeles, and San Diego chapters of Sisters in Crime, as well as Mystery Writers of America. She lived in La Quinta and Laguna Beach, California.
