In this dramatic mid-Victorian novel, young farmer George Fielding struggles beneath the weight of poverty and family obligations, while the unscrupulous squire John Meadows becomes intent upon the woman George loves. Conspiring to destroy George, Meadows manipulates the law and conspires to have another man falsely accused, leading George to leave for Australia in search of fortune. Meanwhile the mistreatment of prisoners in a corrupt penal system forms a stark secondary thread. As truths are revealed, injustices exposed and characters changed, the novel argues that redemption is always possible: it is never too late to mend.
