This mid-19th-century A. & C. Black (Edinburgh) edition of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart. is illustrated with steel engravings after watercolours by J. M. W. Turner, a continuation of the Turner-illustrated tradition associated with the legacy of the Abbotsford Club. In this volume V, the frontispiece shows the junction of the Rivers Greta and Tees near Rokeby, engraved by John Pye after Turner’s original design. The title-page vignette depicts Staffa (including Fingal’s Cave), engraved by Edward Goodall after Turner’s atmospheric treatment of the Hebridean scene. First commissioned for Cadell’s edition in the 1830s, these views were reused here in this early Victorian reissue to complement Scott’s verse with vivid landscapes.
