The book has been completely revised and reorganised. Separate chapters have been allotted to hepatic coma, ascites and cholestasis (which has been reclassified). Particular emphasis has been laid on electron microscopic changes in the various disease states and on the immunological aspects of liver disease, particularly in the chapters on active chronic hepatitis and primary biliary cirrhosis. Variations in serum immunoglobulins are analysed. In addition, this edition introduces new aspects of bilirubin metabolism; intrapulmonary shunting in cirrhosis; aflatoxin and human disease; a new classification of iron storage disease; the diagnosis of pre-symptomatic Wilson’s disease; the relation of cirrhosis to diabetes mellitus; the use of scintiscanning and celiacography in the localisation of space-filling lesions in the liver; hepatic resection and transplantation; the relation of biliary micelles to gall-stone formation and the role of infection in biliary disease. There are 96 new figures and at least 1000 important new references from the world literature. In spite of this the edition is very little larger than its predecessor.
