FLOWERS IN COLOUR For many years gardeners have lacked an inexpensive book with coloured illustrations of garden flowers. We have all suffered the exasperation of seeing, in a public park for instance, a plant we liked and wanted to obtain for ourselves, but not knowing its name, we have been unable to do anything about it. A. G. L. Hellyer, Editor of Amateur Gardening and Gardening Illustrated, has now made good this deficiency in Flowers in Colour, in which he describes over a thousand species and varieties of plants for the garden and greenhouse. Nearly three hundred genera are dealt with and every one of these has one or more illustrations in colour from original watercolour drawings, made from living material, by Miss Cynthia Newsome-Taylor, specially for this book. In addition to the coloured plates there are, on the text pages, nearly five hundred line illustrations taken from the charming wood engravings made by James de Carle Sowerby for the nineteenth-century Encyclopaedia of Plants by J. C. Loudon. Mr Hellyer has chosen to describe and illustrate the plants that are the best and most commonly grown in this country in the hope that this will enable many gardeners to acquire a better knowledge of more familiar and important plants. He has been guided throughout in the preparation of the book by the belief that illustration is often more helpful than description when trying to familiarize gardeners with the varied and beautiful flowers that are now available to them. Flowers in Colour, however, is much more than a picture book, for Mr Hellyer, a knowledgeable plantsman, in addition to describing the plants, gives directions for their culture.
